Dovetail's Top 5 green building techniques

It is part of our mission to always incorporate green building practices into the project process. The following are our 5 most commonly used sustainable building practices:

1. Using locally-milled wood products for timbers, dimensional lumber, siding, decking, trim materials and cabinetry. Naturally rot resistant woods are selected to replace pressure treated lumber whenever possible.

2. Designing new construction with an advanced framing technique called Optimum Value Engineering (OVE). OVE decreases material costs and labor time while increasing overall energy performance. These benefits are achieved by increasing the space between the framing members in wall, floor and ceiling systems. As well as increasing the size of the framing members, which creates more room for insulation in each wall cavity and decreases the overall conductive losses through the wooden frame of the building.

3. Specifying high efficiency appliances, lighting and HVAC systems when they are requested or required to minimize the building’s electrical needs.

4. Always selecting non-toxic materials, such as: Benjamin Moore’s Eco-Spec paint and Bio Preserve’s Soy Guard wood sealer. These types of products maintain indoor air quality and minimize off-gassing.

5. Keeping construction site waste to a minimum and recycling as many products as possible. Dovetail Builders, LLC works with the local organization, Significant Elements, who removes all left over building material, fixtures, doors, and windows for sale in the reclamation market.
